The theory of long tails is very interesting - but in short, long tails refer the the keyword phrases entered by browsers looking for a specific subject or topic. In general it means the following:

When a visitor starts searching for a new car the search would go like this:

  • First search in Google: new car (with 30,000,000 results)
  • Second search: new car toyota (with 5,000,000 results)
  • Third search: new car toyota tazz (with 2,000,000 results)
  • Forth search: new car toyota tazz white (or whatever)

The visitor progressed from a relatively unqualified phrase to a ‘long tail‘ phrase.
